About the School
Mossy Head School is located in the community of Mossy Head in Walton County, Florida. Our beautiful school is just minutes from DeFuniak Springs and Crestview. We are also convenient to Niceville with access to I-10. Our Vision Statement is "Enrich the Present, Inspire the Future, Honor the Past". We believe the best is yet to come for the Mossy Head community and for MHS!
At present, we are a K-5 elementary school with a solid and growing Volunteer Pre-K program. We are a Positive Behavior School (PBS) that uses incentives and a proven rewards system to encourage positive choices. Students work hard to earn Mustang Moolah, which is reward money for positive behavior choices. PBS encourages students to:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Show Compassion
- Use Self Control
The heartbeat of our school is our students and wonderful parents who generously volunteer their time and support. Classes at Mossy Head are highly interactive and "hands-on". We implement the Project-Based Learning design model for instruction which allows students to learn in an inquiry-based way. During the school day, enrichment activities also enhance school life at MHS. Students attend Physical Education (PE) three times a week, and music and art classes once a week. They also use the media center and skills lab on a regular basis. Character Education lessons are presented to students once a month from our School Counselor, Mrs. Gregor because "Character Counts!"
MHS offers extra-curricular activities for upper elementary students who qualify. The Headliners, Mossy Head School's Show Choir, meets afterschool one day a week to practice for school and community performances. Headliners is open to fourth and fifth grade students who meet academic and behavior criteria. Mustang News, MHS's Morning TV Production Show, is a cast of fifth graders who work very hard to deliver the morning news for us every day from the Production Studio. Students must audition in order to be invited to be a part of Mustang News. The Mustang News director is Mrs. Allie Blanton. Fifth Grade students may also be a "Mustang Marshal". Marshals are students who act as a liason between the school and student life at Mossy Head. Students must go through an approval process to be a Marshal. The Marshal's Sponsor is Mrs. Leslie Hulion.
Mossy Head School was established in 2008.
Mossy Head School's Mascot is the Mustang.
