MHS honors Veterans

November 10, 2015

Mossy Head School hosted a Veteran's Day program on November 10th to honor our past and present military service men and women for Veteran's Day. Fifth grade students performed patriotic songs for the crowd of students, parents, Veterans, and staff. Fourth grade students, Lyndsey Wright and Akadian Campbell, performed a skit called "What is a Veteran?". MHS students had the privilege of listening to a Veteran, Sgt. L'Orange, tell about his service in the military. MHS says THANK YOU to all Veterans for your service!

Mossy Head School hosted a Math and APTT (Academic Parent Teacher Team) Night for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade parents. Parents visited their child's classroom and learned strategies to help their child with math at home, as well as looking at their child's math data. Parents set goals for their child in math and worked with teachers to create a plan on reaching that goal. Students in 3rd-5th grades enjoyed a dance while their parents met with their teachers. By teachers and parents working together, our students will reach their Destination------Learning!

Congratulations to Naydene Higgins for being chosen as the Student of the Month for November. Naydene is a member of the Mustang News, MHS's morning show, serves as a Mustang Marshall for MHS, and has been elected as a K-Kid. Naydene is an excellent role model to her peers in and out of the classroom. Way to go, Naydene!

Students and staff of Mossy Head School enjoyed dressing up as their favorite book character and parading around the school for parents and visitors. Students also displayed a word that described their character on their costume. Our annual Character Parade helps promote and celebrate reading at MHS!

It’s time for our FALL BOOK FAIR! Our book fair will begin on Monday, October 26th and will end on Friday, October 30th. Students will receive a flyer with books that will be available at the book fair for purchase. If you are sending money to school for students to purchase books, please remember to add 7.5% tax onto your order. Please make checks payable to Mossy Head School. Since fall fling tickets will also be on sale that week, please put Book Fair money in an envelope with your child’s name/teacher and “Book Fair” written on the front. Students will be able to come during normal media center hours and purchase from the book fair. Please see special times below for parents to visit the book fair with their child.

The book fair is also available online again this year at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/mossyheadschool. This is a great way to get out of town family and friends involved in our book fair! Books ordered online will be delivered to the school 7-10 business days after the book fair ends. I am looking forward to an awesome, fun-filled week!

Happy Reading,

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We would like to invite all of our families to Mossy Head School’s “DADS TAKE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DAY” event on Thursday, October 8, 2015.  We encourage all fathers to attend the grade level activity planned for their child. Activities will be scheduled in 20 minute increments per grade level to allow dads to visit all of their children’s classrooms on this day. All father figures are welcomed, including stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, foster fathers and other significant role models. Although the event is centered on fathers, mothers and other family members are also welcome.

The intent of this initiative is to highlight the significant difference fathers and father figures can make by taking a more active role in their children’s educational experience. When fathers play a more active role in a child’s education, children perform better academically; have fewer discipline problems; and become more responsible adults. We hope all fathers will take this opportunity to become more familiar with our school and staff and that you will return often.

“DADS TAKE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DAY” is just one chance for us to shine the spotlight on dads and encourage men to get involved in the school setting. For more information about “DADS TAKE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DAY,” please contact Mossy Head School at 892-1290. We hope to have great attendance during this event.
